Description

STATs are so named because they serve both Signal Transducers in the cytoplasm and Activators of Transcription in the nucleus. Each STAT molecule contains a Src-homology 2 (SH2) domain, that binds specifically to phosphotyrosine. The phosphorylated STATs form SH2-mediated dimers and are then translocated to the nucleus, where they bind to DNA and direct specific transcriptional initiation.
